The death of print?

Throughout my four years of studying journalism I have many times that print journalism is soon only going to be a thing of the past. The Internet is taking over and everything will eventually go online. Today most big newspaper and magazines have a print edition as well as a website. Different teachers have different opinions about this, and personally I think print will always be valued. I get that for many it can be easier to read the morning paper on an iPad instead of having to spread out a huge piece of paper, but there definitely is something "special"about holding the paper in your hand and flip through the pages. Many people tend to think this is only something the older generations believe in, but I'm not so sure.

A magazine is (my personal opinion) way better to read on that nice, glossy paper, than on a screen. First of all you can't bring your iPad everywhere. It will get too hot if you bring it out in the sun for too long, and you always have to be careful not to spill anything or drop it. You can take a print magazine anywhere and it doesn't really matter if you treat it carefully or not- it's just paper. You can't snuggle up, in any position you want with an iPad. Not in the same way. I guess what I am trying to say, is not that I am against new technology or ways of getting the news or gossip, it's just that I don't believe in the death of print media. I just don't. What do you guys think about this? Do you prefer a magazine over an iPad or vice versa?

Wrapping it all up

After four years in Hawai'i it is time to move back to Norway. Four years of living comes with a LOT of luggage built up- literally, and most of it I can't bring with me back. In the middle of studying for finals, finishing up portfolio's for various classes and trying to have a life at the same time- I am packing up all my belongings, deciding on what stays and what goes. You are probably wondering why I have a picture a car here now. Well, my car is one of many things I can't bring with me and therefore I need to sell it. ( btw, if you know anyone who are looking to buy a car, let me know. Pontiac G6, 2009 model, 28000 miles, $9000+-).
I have been to Goodwill maybe five times this past semester cause I have too much stuff. I am seriously starting to wonder if I am a hoarder! I think I have 25 pairs of shoes in my closet, and I probably only wear half of them on a regular basis. I would bring much more stuff back with me, but the problem is that extra suitcases are so expensive... and I guess it's kind of an excuse to buy new stuff as well (I know, I'm bad). Either way, my wardrobe consists mostly of summer clothes and in Norway that just won't cut it. I'm NOT looking forward to wearing so many layers of clothes that I can hardly move...

Sunday Funday

This sunday I feel really good. That is because I didn't go out last night ( I know it was Cinco de Mayo). I would have gone out, but since I was stupid and went out the night before, I was honestly too hungover to even think about the idea going out, so I stayed in. It felt good not being hungover today though, when everyone else was, hehe. Here are some pictures I took today at Makapu'u Beach. Hope everyone else had a great saturday and Mexican-fiesta-day!  

View from my lanai

Recently I have had an extra beautiful view from my apartment lanai. First an amazing, vibrant rainbow, then just last night, the full moon... I am so happy that my lanai glass door was fixed in time for me to see this! It has been boarded up with plywood for almost two months after our handyman accidentally shattered the glass (he was ok). Did any one else get any good pictures on the full moon this past saturday?

Henri Cartier-Bresson

One of my very favorite photographers is Henry Cartier-Bresson. He was truly an amazing artist (even though he did not refer to himself as an artist). He is considered the father of modern photojournalism and has contributed a lot to generations of photographers. His camera of choice was the Leica, and usually always using a 35mm lens, and black and white film. He traveled all over the world before he died and covered many of the great upheavals of the 20th century. Here are just a few of his photos that I am a big fan of. Heart of our Keiki

A couple of weeks ago my ADPR class held an art event for some of the children who are part of Family Programs Hawai'i. After weeks of planning, getting supplies etc. it was time to get creative. The class was divided into several groups, and we all had different artsy and fun activities planned out for the kids. The kids were 4 to  17 years old so it was a challenge coming up with something that would be fun for everyone. Our group decided to let to the kids cut out their own stencils and either use the cut  our part to create a white space on water color paper or the white space itself. Some of the smaller kids had a hard time cutting and didn't really understand but they had fun and painted their own things. We got some pretty cool art work. It was really fun being part of something like this! The kids really seemed to enjoy that we were there and it made us all feel pretty good. Above are some pics from the children painting.

Missing my little Alex...

Alex is my younger brother who still lives back in Norway. I like to call him little-Alex but the fact is that is not that little anymore. He will turn 19 in May, is graduating from high school and is much taller than me. he came to visit me in Hawai'i in March, and we had such a good time. I miss him every day!

Time running out...

It's true.. time  is running out for me, at least my time here in Hawai'i. May 25 I am going back to Norway, starting a job (hopefully) and moving to Oslo, which is the capital. After living here on the island for four years, this has become home for me, and I'm really not ready to move back home. It's not that I don't like Norway but I am just so much more happy living somewhere like this, with a tropical climate. Norway is beautiful in the summer, and in the winter as well, but the winter just lasts too long and it's too cold. Above I've attached some pictures that I took in Norway in the past year.. some from the summer and some from the winter..

Hello again!

I haven't been all that active on this blog lately..so much going on with school and spring break. I really wanted to go to Kaua'i this break but that never happened. I ended up just having a relaxing spring break on O'ahu, going to the beach and hiking almost ever single day. Did you guys do anything fun? Here are some photo's from my spring break (the shrimp shack on North Shore, Waimea beach and Makapu'u with friends visiting all the way from Norway).

New lens for my camera...YAY

Hi again. I don't have much to say today but i recently got a new lens for my Canon 50D, and I've out and about looking for pretty little things to capture. It's a macro lens and taking pictures of details is one of my favorite things to do. If you have ever gone on a hike with me for example, you will often see me laying on the ground trying to keep my hand steady taking pictures of ants, seeds or other thing that I think look interesting up close. I've attached some photos I took these past two weeks. (I realize I need to get a real tripod, cause some of these are not as sharp as I would like them to be.. but still, I think they came out pretty nice).  

Hello

Since this is my first blog post I might as well start with introducing myself. My name is Andréa, and I am currently a senior at Hawai'i Pacific University. I moved to Hawai'i when I was 18 years old, and I am born and raised in Norway. My major is journalism, so many people have pointed out that it was about time I started a blog. I don't consider myself a blogger at all, and didn't even think I would ever start a blog, but here I am thanks to a school assignment. 

I'm 23 years old and in a few months my four years in Hawai'i will be over (something that makes me so sad that I don't even want to talk about it). 
After graduation my plan is to move back to Norway, maybe only for a year, just to try out being Norwegian again, making some money and paying back school loans. I plan to move back to the U.S. sometime in the near future, perhaps for a masters degree.
My hobbies for the past four years include hiking, reading, going to the beach, hanging out with friends, working out, and last but definitely not least, taking pictures. On this blog I will write about everything and nothing, things going on in my life and I will probably add many pictures of different places and events. Enjoy!
